New Coalition Aims for NG911 in all 911 Systems by 2020
The NG911 NOW Coalition is working to implement NG911 in every state and territory by 2020
Recently, national public safety leaders and industry joined together to create a coalition focused on rapidly accelerating the deployment of Next Generation 911 (NG911). The NG911 NOW Coalition is working to address the funding, technical, policy and legislative challenges that have stalled NG911 from being implemented more broadly.
The NG911 NOW Coalition was founded by some of the nation’s leading 911 associations: the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), the National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA) and the Industry Council for Emergency Response Technologies (iCERT), and is recruiting partner organizations and collaborating with others, such as the NG9-1-1 Institute and experts in government and academia.
The Coalition’s goal is: By the end of the year 2020, all 911 systems and centers in all 56 states and territories will have sufficiently funded, standards-based, end-to-end, IP-based 911 capabilities, and will have retired legacy 911 systems, without any degradation in service to the public.
Accelerated implementation of NG911 will:
Increase compatibility with emerging communication trends
Enhance the flexibility, reliability and survivability of the nation’s 911 system
Improve emergency response for the public and emergency responders
Reduce the cost of operating the 911 system
What happens if we do not act to implement NG911 swiftly? Failure to act in a timely and effective manner would result in a number of negative consequences. Inaction would:
Prolong nationwide deployment, increase costs, and delay NG911’s many benefits
Risk incompatibility with emerging communication trends
Result in missed opportunities for improved emergency response
Create technological obsolescence and increased security risks
“The companies and organizations that support the NG911NOW Coalition really put their commitment to NG911 into action,” said Laurie Flaherty, coordinator of the National 911 Program. “By working together, their combined effort will bring all of us closer to making NG911 a reality.”
Many challenges need to be resolved before NG911 not only comes to fruition, but more importantly, becomes ubiquitous across the U.S. The NG911 NOW Coalition will be a leading advocate for accelerated deployment of NG911. Find out more at www.NG911NOW.org.
